Mitcham's second match in the 2009 edition of the Europa Shield tournament was against Cascais CC.
Peter Teague, Craig Gosling, Amanda Dunckley and Carly Holness started in first attack. Mitcham's defensive line up featured Dave Synott, Ross Bower, Kate Wragg and Kathryn Ayres.
Mitcham took 4 minutes to reach 2-0 with goals through Peter Teague and Manda Dunckley before Cascais scored from the penalty line on 7 minutes.
The team from south-east London scored the next four goals without reply to take the scores to 6-1. During this time 23-year-old Craig Gosling fell awkwardly slightly twisting his ankle - Gosling was substituted as a precaution, being replaced by Jon Taylor.
Both teams scored one further goal each before half time, leaving Mitcham ahead by four goals - 7-3.
Kathryn Ayres scored Mitcham's first goal in the second half after 5 minutes without any goals from either team. Mitcham then appeared to relax and eased up the pressure. Cascais scored the next 3 goals to take the scoreline to 8-6.
Mitcham realising that if the team lost this match the tournament would almost certainly be over before midday on the first day of competition, stepped up the tempo and scored three times to pull away from the opposition.
Final score 11-6 to Mitcham. In general it was a better performance by Mitcham, but one fraught with too many mistakes.
