Mitcham started the 2009 edition of the Europa Shield tournament with a woeful display against Nottingham Korfball Club.
Nottingham raced into a 2-0 lead within four minutes through former Mitcham player Joe Bedford. Karen Sparrow scored a free pass to half the deficit. On 7 minutes Mitcham had an opportunity to level the scores from the penalty spot, however Peter Teague was unable to convert the chance.
Two minutes later Nottingham's Hannah Lorrimer extended their lead by scoring a running in shot. After the change over Mitcham's Ella Wright scored a trademark middle distance goal from the side of the korf. The next 11 minutes passed without another goal from either side.
At half time Nottingham led Mitcham by one goal: 3-2.
Mitcham's player/coach, Dave Synott entered the action four minutes into the second half replacing Jon Taylor who was playing in his first European match. The change had an immediate impact as Mitcham leveled the scores with a goal from Ross Bower.
The second half saw an increase in goals scored when compared to the first 20 minute half - however the final number of goals scored was no near high enough for a korfball match - a problem that has plagued British korfball for some time.
Former Mitcham players Heather Ikwuemesi and Joe Bedford scored 5 goals in the second half to maintain Nottingham's advantage. Mitcham's Kate Wragg, Craig Gosling and Aimee Evans added their name to the score sheet by scoring one goal each, however this was not enough.
Nottingham deservedly finished the match ahead by 2 goals. Final score 8-6.
